Liverpool 1 Sevilla 3: Captain Coke leads holders to Europa League history

Sevilla Celebrating Europa Cup
Two goals from Coke saw Sevilla come from behind to win a third consecutive Europa League with a 3-1 victory over Liverpool in Basle.
Unai Emery's men, outplayed in the first half, responded with an emphatic second 45 minutes to leave Liverpool reeling and condemn Jurgen Klopp to a fifth-straight defeat in a major final.
Liverpool, who had dispatched Villarreal so impressively in the second leg of the semi-final, were the better side in the first half and deservedly took the lead when Daniel Sturridge curled in a superb finish from the edge of the area.
But Sevilla, who came from behind to beat Dnipro in last year's final, responded seconds after half-time with Kevin Gameiro's 29th goal of the season, before Coke capped a fine team move to put the holders ahead.
Klopp, whose side also lost the League Cup final to Manchester City in February, introduced Divock Origi in a bid to find a response but Coke struck a crucial blow 20 minutes from time, steering the ball beyond Simon Mignolet from close range despite Liverpool's appeals for offside.
Liverpool produced a memorable comeback against AC Milan to win their last European trophy in 2005, but there was to be no repeat of those Istanbul heroics as Sevilla became the first team to win Europe's secondary competition three years running and ensured a spot in next season's Champions League.
Sevilla started with more control in a cagey opening 10 minutes, although Emre Can brought the first save of the match out of David Soria with a low effort from the edge of the area.
Daniel Carrico made a timely intervention to hook Sturridge's header off the line as Liverpool began to look threatening on the break, and Roberto Firmino felt he should have earned a penalty when he diverted the ball into the arm of the Sevilla centre-back.
Gameiro got his first sight of goal, hooking a bicycle kick narrowly wide of the near post following a corner, but Sturridge produced a moment of magic to open the scoring 10 minutes before the break.
Philippe Coutinho found Sturridge on the edge of the area and the England striker bent a sublime finish beyond Soria with the outside of his left foot.
Lovren thought he had made it 2-0 with a towering header four minutes later, but the assistant referee flagged for offside after Sturridge had stuck out a foot to intercept the ball.
The Liga side would have been glad to go into the break just a goal behind but they produced a fine response just 17 seconds into the second half. Mariano skipped easily past the challenge of former Sevilla full-back Alberto Moreno and squared across goal for Gameiro, who tapped into an unguarded net.
Sevilla, suddenly buoyant, missed two great chances to take the lead through Gameiro before the hour mark. The Frenchman was first denied by a fine block tackle from Kolo Toure after racing in behind the Liverpool back line, before he scuffed a volley straight at Mignolet after Steven N'Zonzi's header found him completely unmarked six yards out.
Yet just as Sevilla looked as though they might rue those misses, Coke stepped up to put his side in control. A fine passing move involving Ever Banega and Vitolo saw Sevilla slice through the heart of Liverpool's midfield, and when the ball broke to Coke, he rifled a first-time shot into Mignolet's bottom-right corner.
And Coke put the holders on the brink of an historic win six minutes later, squeezing a shot in off Mignolet from the right of the six-yard box after the ball had deflected off Coutinho and into the Sevilla captain's path.
Liverpool pushed for a repeat of the dramatic comeback which saw them oust Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals, but Sevilla held on to lift the trophy in front of their vociferous supporters.

Liverpool 1 Chelsea 1: Late Benteke strike earns a draw

An injury-time header from substitute Christian Benteke cancelled out a stunning goal from Eden Hazard as Liverpool and Chelsea drew 1-1 in the Premier League on Wednesday.
Benteke made the most of an error from visiting goalkeeper Asmir Begovic to grab Liverpool an unlikely point in manager Jurgen Klopp's 50th game in charge.
Hazard's fourth goal in as many Premier League matches, a fine solo effort in the 32nd minute, had appeared enough for Chelsea to become the first visiting side to win at Anfield in the league since January 17.
Despite being without suspended captain John Terry, Guus Hiddink's understrength team were within touching distance of spoiling Liverpool's home farewell a week before they face Sevilla in the Europa League final.
However, Begovic presented Benteke with the chance to level matters in the third minute of stoppage time when he palmed a deep cross to the Liverpool forward, who gratefully headed home into an unguarded net.
With their trip to Basel for the decider against Sevilla looming large on the horizon, Klopp selected the same XI that had started the 3-0 home win over Villarreal in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final.
Daniel Sturridge looked eager to impress against one of his former clubs, drawing a foul from makeshift centre-back John Obi Mikel – replacing the absent Terry in the heart of Chelsea's defence – inside the opening minute.
Yet Liverpool – wearing a new kit complete with gold trim around the neck – too often let Mikel and his defensive colleagues off the hook.
Roberto Firmino summed up the home side's slack play when he wasted a glorious one-on-one opportunity. Carried wide by a needlessly heavy touch, the Brazilian's effort beat Begovic but ended up in the side-netting.
Liverpool's sloppiness was not just in attack either, as they backed off Hazard to allow him the chance to break the deadlock.
The Belgian picked up the ball out wide and despite being confronted by four red shirts during his mazy run, never had to deal with a challenge. Allowed to progress to the edge of the area, Hazard aimed a shot low into the right corner of the net.
Bertrand Traore had a wonderful chance to double Chelsea's lead when he beat the hesitant Simon Mignolet to an over-hit pass just before the break. However, with Liverpool's goalkeeper caught out of position, the forward missed the target.
Mignolet was in the right place to keep out a low drive from Hazard early in the second half, while he also had to beat away a stinging drive from Pedro, complete with face mask to protect a broken nose.
Begovic was occasionally called into action at the other end, including denying Sturridge at close range after the forward had been played through by Adam Lallana's wonderful reverse pass.
Liverpool seemed to have run out of ideas in attack until Begovic made a mess of substitute Sheyi Ojo's cross, his inability to deal with the delivery allowing the hosts to level right at the death.
Klopp will hope the result keeps confidence levels high going into the final match of the league season away to West Brom, followed by the showpiece game in Switzerland.

Sunderland 3-0 Everton: Newcastle, Norwich and Aston Villa Relegated from EPL

Sunderland Survived EPL
Patrick van Aanholt's opener and Lamine Kone's brace earned Sunderland a 3-0 victory over Everton as Sam Allardyce's side ensured their Premier League survival at a jubilant Stadium of Light and relegated fierce rivals Newcastle United and Norwich City.
The hosts came into Wednesday's meeting knowing three points would be enough to secure safety and send Newcastle down, along with Norwich, who were hosting Watford.
This victory leaves the Black Cats four points clear of both clubs with just one round of fixtures remaining, with Norwich's 4-2 win over Watford proving in vain for Alex Neil's men.
Buoyed by Saturday's battling 3-2 victory over Chelsea and facing a woefully out-of-form Everton side, Sunderland sealed the points with three goals in 17 minutes either side of half-time.
Van Aanholt made the breakthrough with a free-kick in the 38th minute that raised question marks over Joel Robles' positioning, before Kone netted a double with two simple close-range finishes.
It was another performance to forget for Everton in what has proved to be a dismal end to the league season, although there was one positive note with Gareth Barry making a Premier League record 572nd start.
But the headlines belonged to Sunderland, who can travel to Watford on Sunday safe in the knowledge that another season of top-flight football is assured and will particularly relish playing such a pivotal part in Newcastle slumping down to the Championship.
Allardyce named an unchanged side from the one that defeated Chelsea, but it took the hosts a while to settle into the match.
The first effort of note did not arrive until the 24th minute when Younes Kaboul cut inside on his right foot and curled a superb effort narrowly wide of the far post.
Everton showed three alterations, but the changes failed to inspire the visitors and Sunderland scored twice in the space of four minutes shortly before the break to take a huge stride towards survival.
After Ramiro Funes Mori brought down Jermain Defoe 25 yards out, Van Aanholt stepped up and sent his free-kick around the wall into an unguarded portion of the goal, with Joel having stepped too far to his left in an attempt to anticipate the flight of the ball.
The Everton goalkeeper then went some way to making amends for that error by superbly tipping Defoe's header over, but, from the resulting corner, Sunderland doubled their lead as the visitors failed to clear and Yann M'Vila headed back into the box for Kone to smash home a volley from close range.
Defoe saw an effort cleared off the line by Matthew Pennington 10 minutes into the second period, but once more Everton struggled to deal with the subsequent set-piece, Joel's punch ricocheting off James McCarthy before running perfectly for Kone to sweep into an empty net from two yards.
Joel's excellent reaction save denied Defoe 11 minutes later as Sunderland threatened to run riot, although Funes Mori did bring a first notable save out of Vito Mannone with a back-post header.
Defoe was denied again by Joel in the final minute, but it mattered little as Sunderland comfortably held on before ecstatic scenes greeted the full-time whistle.

Buhari Signs 2016 Budget into Law

Nigeria President Mohammadu Buhari
President Mohammadu Buhari has assented to the 2016 Appropriation Bill, giving way for full implementation of the budget.
The signing took place just a moment ago at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
But apparently satisfied with the corrections made on the document, the president on Friday put ink on paper signing the dotted lines.

NASS hands over 2016 budget to Presidency

The corrected version of the 2016 budget was, yesterday, handed over to the Presidency through the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters Senate (Senator), Ita Enang.
The final conclusion and onward transmission of the corrected version of the budget, which had suffered delay, was disclosed by the Deputy Chairman of House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Jonathan Gaza, while briefing journalists at the assembly complex.
Though Gaza did not give details on how and when the budget was transmitted to the Presidency, sources close to the Presidency confirmed that it was Senator Ita Enang who collected the budget from the 10-man committee of the National Assembly, headed by the Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun.
Recall that earlier in the day, it was scheduled that the deputy speaker would hand over the corrected version of the budget in the presence of journalists, but the plan was later cancelled and was submitted quietly.
While fielding questions from journalists on the position of the budget, Gaza said: “It is the same media that has kept the whole country abreast. Don’t forget that we are equally Nigerians and it is our desire for the country to move forward.
“A committee was set up, which was in the papers and was headed by the deputy speaker. Members from the Senate as well as the executive arm looked at the budget and I believe the resolutions have been transmitted or rather the resolutions have been submitted to the President.
“I am quite optimistic and I enjoin all other Nigerians, including yourselves, to be as optimistic as me that in the very near future, this budget will be signed into law.”
On when the budget was submitted and whether it was an amendment that was submitted, the House Deputy spokesman said: “Well, I honestly believe that we have to be quite careful with our choice of words.
“Over time, there have been differences and both arms of government had sat down to look at what those issues are. Most importantly, what we want is to see our country and our economy moving forward.”
